Sometimes life takes your breath away. That je ne sais quoi, that something so special it is hard to put it into words. It enables us to see the extraordinary in our ordinary lives. My husband and I love to drive down to the beach for sunset, to see the brilliant fiery colors, the glow on the ocean, and how that time of daylight brings beauty to everything it touches.
There is something I enjoy just as much. Seeing people come together to watch the sunset: couples wrapped up in blankets, people exchanging knowing smiles, and the crowds watching and taking pictures of the masterpiece in the sky. Beauty draws us together.
It makes me wonder why we share our faith through rules and systems instead of sharing in the beauty surrounding us? We didn’t create sunsets, the vast Milky Way, or even a single blade of grass. Instead of talking about these things, we focus on the rules of religion. No one wants to be told what to do by someone who thinks they know better, but we all want to share in the beauty of God’s creation. It draws us together and makes us curious about things beyond.
Beauty is a wonderful way to share our faith. We can start with just genuinely appreciating something bigger than ourselves. God wants us to live in wonder together. We don’t need to convince; we need to appreciate. As Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”
